Hypertension in Adults

Hypertension is a serious condition that if not treaded can cause devastating health
issues. Factors that contribute to high blood pressure are age, race, family history and life style. Changes in lifestyle, such as, diet exercise, alcohol and smoking can lower blood pressure. If there is no change then medication is the next option.

Hypertension is a medical condition that develops as one ages. Both men and women are affected between the ages of 45 -50 years old. Family history, ethnicity, lifestyle play a major role in hypertension. African American and Native Americans have a higher incident of hypertensions than Caucasians and the problem is getting worse. Hypertension is the blood pressure level of 140 systolic and 90 diastolic. There are changes that can be made to control blood pressure level. My focus is on medication intervention if lifestyle changes are not successful this is the next option.

Intervention

Hypertensive medication is introduced as the last option when lifestyle changes so not work. The newly diagnose patient usually has not symptoms so the diagnosis is not considered serious. Patients are taught how to monitor blood pressure daily at the same time. Take their medications at the same time each day. The patient is also encouraged to use a calendar as a guide each day to remind them to take their medication each day. As the patient takes his or her medication the patient can make a mark through the date the medication is taken. Another option is to get a pill box and fill in a week’s supply.
The patient is also reminded to follow up with appointments and keep the doctor informed with any side effects such as dizziness, hair loss, or and sexual dysfunction. The patient is also reminded not to stop any medication suddenly and if there is a problem to notify the doctor. If one medication does not work then another medication may be prescribed.
