Examples and New Trend of SCM
The new trend of Supply Chain Management is Cold Chain. Cold Chain is a temperature-controlled supply chain to extend the life time of goods by using cold system. The steps involved in cold chain are procurement, warehousing, transportation and retailing and all these steps took place in temperature controlled atmosphere by using refrigerator trucks, reefer ships, reefer containers, refrigerated warehouse and so on(Dickenson media, 2010). For examples, delivery food products with transports installed with cold system and store food in refrigerator warehouses to maintain the food’s freshness. According to Ojica, the cold chain can reduce post harvest wastage and it plays an important role in supply chain management. The time before cold chain was introduced to the food industry, food products get spoiled easily has always been a big problem which caused much loss to companies. As food can last longer, Cold Chain allows the food industry to globalize their business. Another new trend for Supply Chain Management is Web-based supply chain management. Web-based Supply Chain Management is actually a system that recorded all detail of products, suppliers and customers. With Web-based Supply Chain Management and advance IT technology, the process of distribution will go on more efficiency. According to Dr.Ngai, Web-based Supply Chain Management is an internet enabled SCM system that integrates networks of suppliers, factories, warehouses, distribution centre and retailers, which allow the whole chain of delivery processes go through smoothly so that faster and more flexible coordination can be achieved between a company and its customers and suppliers along the supply chain. In the case of Perky Pies, it had neither used Cold Chain nor Web-based Supply Chain Management.
