The vote is the life-blood of all democracies. It is the mean for citizens to have its outlook recognized by the ruling government. That being said, Charles Krauthammer, claims that low voter turnout is actually favorable for a democracy! How is this possible one might ask if the fate of democratic administrations are better off left in the hands of the few when everybody should be voicing their opinion for maximum public output? Well, Krauthammer describes that the decline in voter turnout up to the 1990s will bring about political serenity because he stated himself that, "History is not made by politics. It is made by economics, by demographics and, above all, by science and technology." (Krauthammer, 8) In other words, if these foundations are to blossom, the scuffle over a perfect course of governmental policy in any aspect must drop.
Political harmony is vital for societal well-being, it enables the populace to stay positive and keep their eye on the ball to plan for a greater tomorrow. However, is low voter turnout really that beneficial to all avenues that have a government policy? The 9/11 attack, Katrina, the Iraq conflict, and the existing fiscal downturn since 2008 are all reasons for one to keep a watchful eye on the political moves that a citizens government makes so one can see the fire coming and act accordingly. But if low voter turnout means more peace than shouldn’t we strive for the latter? The events I listed all call for a change in policy in order to keep the collective head of the nation up high but they were also wounds that were going to open even more. Since the presidential election of 2008, voting began to increase due to the highly liberal aura of Barrack Obama. The election triggered several minority races in America to build additional effort for the left to win over the right.
