John Tauer’s article “Latrell Sprewell + Pizza hut < Intrinsic Motivation” shows that getting rewards for doing something like playing basketball and reading books can worth less then something you do for the love of it. The author talks about how reward can sometimes motivate a person to do many things. On the other hand, he shows that it can also hurt them by giving the example of a basketball player name Latrell Sprewell who loves to play basketball. However, Latrell demands to double his salary in order to play basketball which shows that he is no longer playing for the love of the game but to get a large sum of money. The author also talks about intrinsic motivation which is completing a task that will give satisfaction. He showed a study with kids using markers which they already like to work with and in addition one of the group would get a reward for using them. The study showed no difference between the two groups. In other words, kids will keep on using marker as long as they are interested in it with or without the rewards. I know this works right now but somehow I need to change this habit so this is not damaging his motivation. Another example of my own experience of internal rewards is having lunch or dinner with my wife. Achieving this makes me feel good inside and...
