Shell general business’s eight principles are based on core values honesty, integrity and respect for people. Their principles promote trust, openness, teamwork, and professionalism, and pride in what they do. As part of these principles, the company commits to contribute to sustainable development, balancing short and long-term interests and integrating economic, environmental and social considerations into its decision-making. If they decide to do joint ventures with other companies, they make sure to use their influence to persuade their partners to adopt and apply consistent with theirs. They also expect contractors to conform to the Principles in all aspects of their works with shell companies. The Shell Code of Conduct clarifies the standards it expects their employees to follow and the behaviors it expects them to adopt. It provides practical advice on how to comply with laws and regulations and how to relate to customers, communities and colleagues. The major issues the Shell company addresses are: Fighting Corruptive Practices, National and International Trade, Health Safety and the Environment, Safeguarding Information and Communications. The SGBP which is the Statement of General Business Principles and has been adopted by all Shell companies provides that all persons must avoid conflicts of interest between their private financial activities and their part in the conduct of company business. All these statements are very useful guides to ethical and socially responsible decision making. They not only govern how each of the Shell companies which make up the group conducts its affairs but they also show how employees should conduct themselves towards customers.
