Elvia Rocha Professor Ganer Communications 100 9 October 2008 Many people seem to think that entertainment law is a glamorous career that offers a way to rub shoulders with celebrities and-up-and coming artists, well truth is entertainment law is a term used for the type of law that provides legal services to the entertainment industry. Like any other lawyer, an entertainment lawyer must spend three years earning a law degree after receiving a bachelor’s degree. California holds some of the top schools which offer entertainment law courses, such as the University of California at Los Angeles, University of Southern California and Stanford University. After finishing school most young attorneys start working in their field of specialization as associates with partners who will direct them in writing contracts and assisting in negotiations. Film, music, television & radio, theatre, multimedia, publishing, visual arts & design are the fields that an entertainment lawyer can choose to specialize in. Event though there are different fields in entertainment law they all share defamation, personality rights and privacy rights issues. It’s not always easy getting into the legal field of entertainment comparing the large number of available attorneys to the limited number of spots available. Communication is the key factor to building relationships and contacts that will help you get into the legal field of entertainment. For example, the social function of communication which increases your ability to meet new people, intercultural communication is also important because in the entertainment field you will deal with people from all over the place. Interning in an entertainment firm before law school and volunteering with a pro-bono organization like California Lawyers for the Arts is part of the small group, public speaking context of communication.
