IPods as learning tools?
Teachers and staff members have often had problems with IPods on their classroom. It becomes such a burden that school administrators have banned them from many schools. But putting aside its problems, what if this device that antagonizes instructors so much becomes one of their most helping tools in teaching? That idea sounds very nice doesn’t it. Sure, its consequences in school are bothersome to say the least, but it can also act as a powerful study aid in a handful of ways. Its advance technology can enable students to store specific music that helps them study or use study-based programs that facilitates the learning process.
One way students can benefit from IPods is by listening to certain music that encourages them to do better on their studies. According to Barbara Bullard a professor in Orange Coast College, students can get pass their insecurities in school and improve their performance after they listen to a certain type of binaural music. She explains that this is due because it contains beats that involve synchronization of tones that stimulates the mind in specific ways, making the person listening to it more motivated on what he’s doing, in this case, school. She also believes that it’s very useful for test preparations and to deal with personal issues. Some example that prove this would be the case of Cathy Love. She was a student who suffered from Fibromyalgia, which made her struggle with concentration. After being recommended on listening to some binary music while she studied, her concentration sharpened and allowed her to pass all her classes with B’s. Another student, Tracy Heffelman, was really anxious on returning to college as an older student. To overcome this, she listened to Einstein’s Dream which involved binaural music, and it helped her get rid of her anxiety and improve her confidence.
