This is Jacob. At the age of four he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He is in the hospital continuously for treatment and checkups. This is Joseph. At the young age of eight months old he was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Severe cases can cause stunted growth and deformity. Without a bone marrow transplant most children do not live past the age of ten. This a Adelyn. She was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at the age of 9 months. Over six months she had to receive six rounds of chemo. This is Gavyn. Two years ago at the age of three he was in a terrible car accident. He was paralyzed from the neck down and put on a ventilator. Why am I telling you the stories of these children? Well there is a problem in our nation. Society has the preconceived notion that in order for stem cell research to progress the killing of babies must occur. Today I am here to bring attention to the epidemic caused by the lack of stem cell research. I hope to lay to rest the negative connotations associated with stem cell research by demonstrating how this issue does not need to be one centered around morals. In order to do that I need to first give you background on what stem cells truly are, explain why there is a need for more stem cell research, and offer a viable solution. Lastly I will give you tangible ways to contribute to the cause.
We have a problem in this world. Stem cell research is not reaching its full potential because of controversy. Stem cell research is not controversial because of its objective, but rather because of the the way which certain types of stem cells are harvested. The research involving most types of stem cells, such as those derived from adult tissues and umbilical cord blood, is not controversial, except when its effectiveness as an alternative to embryonic stem cells is debated.
