Stevenson who was a key player during the split of the IRA became the first chief-of-staff of the PIRA. Stevenson perfected the art of propaganda techniques and was therefore responsible for participating in press conferences to spread the message of the PIRA. After failed negotiation with Britain in 1972, Stevenson ordered an intense IRAcampaign, which resulted in Black Friday that same year. Black Friday involved 22 IRA carbombings within a two hours period in Belfast. Stevenson was jailed that year for his participation with the IRA. He later lost credibility after he gave in during a 57 day hunger strike. Stevenson left the organization in 1981, due to internal issues regarding the Eire Nuastrategy which set up regional governments in each of Ireland’s four provinces. Stevenson passed away on May 2001 after a long illness. Combating the PIRA Works Cited Irish Republican Army (IRA).
