December 28, 2008 EN100-1 Dr. Matilda Rivera All About Me Introduction Growing Up Born in Dallas Texas, everyone just assumes that you become this southern bell that should be barefoot and pregnant with little or no goals and little to no dreams. The only dream and goal was to become a mother and a wife. Of course, my mother and her mother fit that mold. They both stayed home and raised families, never afforded an opportunity for higher education and dreams to become anything different. My parents divorced when I was just a year old, although the divorce didn’t affect me personally that aftermath of the divorce would challenge me as a young child. When I was in second grade I moved to South Padre Island, Texas with my mother. South Padre Island was completely different than Dallas, the culture was different, being only 20 miles north of the Mexican border, and itcarried a strong Mexican culture. It was a culture that I had never really been exposed too; however the culture became a major influence in my life. All my friends were Mexican or had a strong Mexican background, thus showing me what strong ties in family were. My mother remarried when I was young to a man that was much older than my mother. He had children that were already older and moved out of the house; however my mother seemed happy, that’s all that mattered to my sister and me. We didn’t live with my mother for very long before the courts ordered us to live with my father. This changed my life drastically, as well as everyone’s in my family. I moved back to Dallas where my father lived from the age of two until I went into Kindergarten. When I was 6 years old the courts asked me who I wanted to live with and both my sister and I chose to live with my mother. So once again, I moved to South Padre Island. Once I left Dallas, I never saw my father again for many years. He got into trouble with drugs and was sent to prison throughout my childhood. My Mother and Walter treated my sister and I...
