The paper-based order picking process that Dorfman Pacific used was inefficient, and could not support the growing demand for their products. The poor organization was costing the company thousands of dollars each year. The addition of large customers, as well as seasonal peaks caused major issues and unnecessary costs to the company.
Many alternative solutions could have been implemented to increase the efficiency of Dorfman’s order-picking process. The inclusion of an information systems analysis, additional training for the warehouse workers, and improving the present paper-based system and organizational methods are just a few of the alternatives. My primary suggestion would be the implementation and or modification of the existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and install a warehouse management system, which includes the ability for employees in different departments to maintain constant communication with each other via a wireless network.
