E-passport (Biometric Passport)
Area of impact : Fraud.
Word count:1515

Presentation of the issue:
1. The e passport is a combined paper and electronic passport that contains biometric information that can be used to authenticate the identity of travelers. It uses a contactless smart card technology (RFID), including a microprocessor chip (computer chip) and antenna (for both power to the chip and communication) embedded in the front or back cover, or center page, of the passport. Document and chip characteristics are documented in the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO). The passport's critical information is both printed on the data page of the passport and stored in the chip. Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is used to authenticate the data stored electronically in the passport chip making it virtually impossible to forge when all security mechanisms are fully and correctly implemented. The currently standardized biometrics used for this type of identification system are facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and iris recognition. These were adopted after assessment of several different kinds of biometrics including retinal scan also. Can this document solve all our past problems, fraud, illegal immigration, should we file each of us and exclude the ones who aren’t? Would it help us fighting against terrorism?

IT background of the issue
RFID: Radio Frequency Identification chips are used to store, send, and get data from a distance without having direct contact. The information are sent by radio frequency and where put in place first to replace code bars. It consists of a microchip with an included antenna in a compact package. The package is done in a specific structure allowing the RFID to be attached to an object and be tracked. The antenna as a conductive element allows the tag to exchange data with the reader. The micro processor chip is a silicon device which serves as a CPU in computers similar but...
