The miracle of childbirth is an amazing process that most adults desire to experience. However, many individuals struggle with issues of infertility that prevents them from experiencing this miracle that occurs thousands of times each year. In 1978 the face of infertility changed with the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby born with the help of science (Feldman, 2008). In vitro fertilization has given infertile couples the opportunity to have children naturally. In vitro fertilization has also allowed women the flexibility of conception later in life, even after menopause (Feldman, 2008). However in vitro fertilization is not without problems. It can lead to birth defects such as cleft lip or palate and septal heart defects. In addition to complications during or after pregnancy tend to be more common among individuals who utilize in vitro fertilization. One serious complication that is common among individuals with in vitro fertilization is multiple births or higher order births (Feldman, 2008). Although many individuals would not consider multiple births a complication they are a serious complication that can impact the developing babies and mother’s health. This is however a complication that can be greatly reduced by following guidelines that have been developed and implemented. Recently doctors and the media rejoiced in the miraculous birth of eight babies that were conceived utilizing in vitro fertilization. However did the doctor display irresponsible judgment when he agreed to implant six embryos for Nayda Suleman? The doctor disregarded the guidelines put into place by the medical board that oversees in vitro fertilization specialists. This disregard for the medical guidelines placed the mother at risk for a complicated pregnancy. In addition it placed the developing fetuses at risk for developmental delays and deformities.
