The United States Secretary of Homeland Security in charge of the United States Department of Homeland Security, the group concerned with protecting the American homeland and the safety of American citizens. The Secretary is a member of the President's Cabinet. In other words, the secretary of homeland is a part of the presidents party. The position was created following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The new department consisted mainly of arrangements transferred from other cabinet departments because of their role in homeland security, such as the coast guard, border patrol, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA. It does not, however include, the CIA or FBI.


Selected for the position of Secretary of Homeland Security is Janet Napolitano. Janet Napolitano was born November 29, 1957 in New York City to Leonard Michael and Jane Marie Napolitano. Ms. Napolitano is of the Methodist faith and is of the Italian heritage. She has a younger brother and sister named Leonard Michael Jr. and Nancy Angela Haustein. She was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she graduated from Sandia High School in Albuquerque in 1975 and was voted Most Likely to Succeed. She graduated from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, California, where she won a Truman Scholarship, and then received her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law. Janet Napolitano is a member of the Democratic Party. After law school she served as a law clerk for Judge Mary M. Schroeder of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and then joined Schroeder's former firm, the Phoenix law firm Lewis and Roca. She is single and has no children.

In 1991, Janet Napolitano served as an attorney for Anita Hill. Also, Anita Hill has testified that the U.S. and then Supreme court nominee Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her for ten years...
