Maria Montessori was a revolutionary ahead of her time in the field of education. Her goal was to develop the whole personality of the child and the Montessori system which she introduced was based on her strong belief in the spontaneous working of the human intellect. The primary area of her focus was observation, freedom and prepared environment. Thus Montessori gave the world a new way to educate children, a way that brought life and discovery to learning. She also founded her own school by the name of Casa dei Bambini and devised a method of education, which combines a philosophy with practical approach based on the central idea of freedom for the child with a carefully planned and structured environment.
Dr Maria Montessori describes the term self-construction when the child is mentally and physically developed and her philosophy of education was based upon actual observations of children. The children had a unique learning capacity called the absorbent mind which transforms the helpless, gurgling infant into a young personality with all the basic physical and mental abilities needed for human living. Thus having born with an absorbent mind, a young child simply absorbs various goings in his immediate environment. Along with a mind like a sponge the child is also going through sensitive periods. Thus he is able to absorb the basic human ability of feeding, cleaning, dressing one’s self, various fine and gross motor skills, grace and courtesy, cultural customs and a self-identity. Absorbent mind working in tandem with sensitive period is crucial for building knowledge.
