Graduated from university of alabama, pursued law (like her father) and moved to new york city to write
Had many short stories and essays rejected, until a publisher took an interest in one short story suggesting that she expand it into a novel.
She took two-and-a-half years to write "to kill a mockingbird" which was her only novel. It was published in 1960
