The speaker last that came in last class, Ariel Van Cleave, told us some pretty interesting things about her career in the journalism and broadcasting business. She told us about some of her experiences in her years as a journalist and radio producer. She worked in places that range from Ohio to Alaska to Seattle. She shared stories with us about the types of stories she has covered in each location. Two things she shared in particular were very powerful. A story about her covering a plane crash in which people were killed and an audio recording of an interview with a woman who lost her wife to flash flooding. With these two examples came a lot of advice from her when it comes to being a journalist. One main point with the plane crash was when it comes to reporting on stories, you have to a journalist not a person. What she meant by this was that you can’t show emotion in the job. You can’t just jump into an interview. Another main point of hers, which I found most helpful were things to keep in mind when writing or covering a story. These thing to be kept in mind were what’s at stake, what’s happening now, what’s next, find good characters, and pre produce as much as possible. She said with these things, a story can come easier and the quality can be better. The last thing I really liked about what she told us was its ok to try to be like your favorite journalist or broadcaster. She said it’s ok to want to be like them. She told us to take what they do and make it our own. I feel like that was great advice cause sometimes the hardest thing to do when it comes to pretty...
