Kenneth Macmillan

For my Creative Arts Research Skills essay, I have chosen to study ballet. The practitioner I will be researching is a man named Kenneth Macmillan, who was a very well known director of the Royal Ballet. I think that Kenneth Macmillan was a big name in the ballet world, and would be appropriate to research him and the work that he did through the ‘Saddlers wells’ and then the Royal Ballet. Researching Macmillan, will be very interesting, as I believe that I will also find out more on the history of ballet and how the Royal Ballet appeared on the scene.

One of my favourite love stories is ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and one of Kenneth’s main works was this long play ballet; that toured around the world. I often dance small sequences from Romeo and Juliet the ballet in dance class for, so finding out more about this play that he was so involved in will allow me to understand it more and be able to relate it to my own dancing. Also, growing up as a child, one of my most watched movies was the animated version of “Anastasia” about a Russian Princess that loses her family during the Russian revolution. Another one of Kenneth Macmillan’s famous ballet plays, was Anastasia, so already I feel like I am going to enjoy researching ballet and Kenneth Macmillan’s work, as I already am interested and have been for a while in some of his history.

For my research essay, I must select the right effective method and techniques for undertaking research, I must also understand the importance of utilising primary and secondary sources.
