This essay will tell you all about Kibera and all the daily issues people have to face living there. Kibera is mostly known as a huge slum area and is a division of the Nairobi area which is in Kenya located in the East of Africa. It is a neighbour to the city of Nairobi and Kibera is the largest Slum area in the whole of Africa. Kibera's population is near 2.5million and this is 60% of Nairobi's whole population. All the land is owned by the government apart from 10%. Kenyan and Sudanese people occupy about 15% of Kibera. Most people who live in Kibera are very poor and live by less than 50p a day this is due to unemployment at a rate of 50%, this means that people don’t earn a lot. Often there aren't any schools therefore children don’t receive an education and even if there are schools the parents can't afford it because it's not free. There isn't supply to fresh, clean, rushing water to drink or wash with but, the government do sell water for 3 Kenyan shillings (about 2p) per 20 litres which for them is very expensive. It is very packed and un-hygienic therefore diseases spread around quickly and also there are many cases of HIV and AIDS in Kibera. The area isn't a very safe area as there are lots of cases of rape and assault which means everyone has to be even more cautious, this is because it is very dark as there are no street lights and only 20% of Kibera has electricity. As for the economy, it barely even exists as many people in the slum area trade with one another to make as much money as they possibly can.
The characteristics of the slum area is that the houses are made of mud, wood, cardboard or pieces of corrugated iron sheets. The paths between the houses are awkwardly shaped, irregular and narrow and they often have long ditches in the middle of the paths by where the sewage flows down. The ground...
