Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. There are many kinds of cancer, but they all originate because of the growth of abnormal cells. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Today, millions of people are living with cancer or have had cancer. Believe it or not, cancer has troubled people for several of centuries. It is because of the early research that we hold a greater knowledge of cancer today. Today I will speak about cancer; the causes, symptoms and the history of this cruel disease.
The world’s oldest documented case of cancer comes from Ancient Egypt, in 1500 B.C. Some of the earliest evidence of cancer is found among fossilized bone tumors, human mummies, and ancient manuscripts. The details were recorded on a papyrus, documenting eight cases of tumors occurring on the breast. It was treated by cauterization, which was a method used to destroy tissue with a hot instrument called "the fire drill." It was also recorded that this was the only treatment for the disease. Evidence shows that surface tumors were surgically removed the same way they are removed today. In ancient Egypt, it was believed that cancer was caused by the Gods.
There are many causes to cancer. Cancer grows out of the normal cells in the body. Normal cells multiply when the body needs them and die when the body doesn’t need them. Cancer occurs when the growth of cells in the body is out of control and the cells divide too quickly. There are numerous kinds of cancers. Cancer can develop in almost any organ or tissue such as the lung, breast, skin, skin bone or nerve tissue.
Some causes of cancer include benzene or other chemicals, certain poisonous mushrooms, certain viruses, radiation, sunlight or tobacco. The cause of many cancers remains unknown. The most common cause of cancer related death is lung cancer....
