The Kite

In the book “The Kite” there is a very old man who has reached 111 years old. There is a reporter who comes to a small town in Saskatchewan to do an article on the old man, and how he made history. He finds out, while getting to know that old man, that he had the body, functions and abilities of a 70 year old, at age 111. Daddy Sherry is the old mans name. He feels like everyone treats him like a baby and he wants to be more independent and hope that people will trust him. He thinks it is because every old man is put into an old folk’s home at this age, but he is at home, so people have to come look after him. He is always around people and is getting sick of it. Daddy Sherry finds purpose to live when he faces death by little things that bring back memories and make him feel young and independent again.

Daddy Sherry’s gun makes him feel young again because of the patience and precision to hunt, along with all the things he killed when he was younger. P 40. Daddy Sherry, “Why--I’ve killed--I don’t know how many elk an’ antelope--moose an’ deer an’ buffalo I knocked over with this hear.” This shows that just by holding the gun, Daddy gets memories of when he was young, and he enjoys it. When he thinks about hunting, it makes him want to do it and prove he still can do things on his own. P 40. Daddy Sherry, “Why--I know this here gun like I know my own right arm.” Daddy deeply feels for his gun because it brings him meaning in his life about what he has accomplished and he wants those feelings again. His gun represents patients and precision which Daddy admires. He thinks that young people have patients to wait for the perfect moment through drive and determinations to get the job done. You have to be able to withstand harsh conditions some times which takes great determination just to hunt. Precision is something most old people do not have. They get all shaky when holding things, so it would make it extremely difficult to aim a gun. Daddy...
