Can you imagine a life with limited water supply, and no guarantees to sanitary water the next day? Chances are you probably can’t. Here in the United States sanitary water is available everywhere and to everyone, including the homeless. Clean water is a privilege most of us take for granted because we are so accustomed to just having it rather than working for it. Unfortunately, one in every six people on our planet has no access to clean water (Hendley, pg. 28). In 2005 a grand hero, Doc Hendley, founded a non-profit organization “Wine to Water” specifically dedicated to bringing clean water to people in poverty worldwide.
Doc Hendley is the true epitome of a hero and inspiration. Born and raised into a religious household, Hendley always felt like an outcast. He began as a small town bartender in North Carolina, but eventually he felt a “Sinking feeling in my stomach, like I should be doing something better with my life” (Hendley, pg.25). After researching the devastating water crisis occurring in the world, Hendley founded “Wine to Water” and raised twelve thousand dollars within a month. Before he knew it he was on plane headed straight to Sudan. With a one-year contract in Darfur and the authority to distribute the money where he felt it was most necessary, he had no idea was he was in for. Nothing could prepare Hendley for Darfur, one of the most dangerous places in the world with a government-sponsored militia ordered to wipe out an entire population, but he was up for the challenge.
