Kathy Kudler ventured out in 1998 and opened the first of three gourmet food stores, Kudler Fine Foods (KFF), in La Jolla, California. By the year 2000, Kathy’s success enabled her to open the second in Del Mar, with the third store opening in Encinitas in 2003. Kathy had a vision to supply what she referred to as savvy shoppers with the “finest in selected foodstuffs, wines and related needs…and will go to extensive lengths to assure that Kudler’s is the purveyor of choice for customers aspiring to purchase the finest epicurean delights” (University of Phoenix, 2007, p. 1). Kathy worked very hard to realize her vision and has reached a point in her career when she must make some decisions in order for KFF to achieve additional growth and a higher level of success. This paper will cover a problem statement for KFF and an end-vision for future success.
Problem Statement
KFF has three locations in proximity, which enables Kathy to visit each store daily, finalizing inventory, placing orders, ensuring vendors receive payments timely, and handling financial matters (University of Phoenix, 2007, p. 9-12). Initially, Kathy’s efforts paid off and contributed to the overwhelming success of KFF. Currently, however, Kathy works seven days per week and spends long hours performing management responsibilities in the back offices, despite employing qualified team members on site. The loyal customers no longer enjoy Kathy’s personal attention, which leaves Kathy feeling as if she is neglecting her staff and abandoning her patrons. Staff is also concerned that if Kathy became unable to perform her duties for whatever reason, the business would be in jeopardy (Kudler Fine Foods, 2003).
