Lactose intolerance is the inability for some people to digest lactose, which is a sugar found in milk and dairy products, causing side effects for some people. The body naturally produces the lactase enzyme in the small intestine, unless a person is lactose intolerant. The main role of lactase is to change lactose into glucose and galactose. Then the body cells use this simple sugar in a form of energy to transport nutrients. A person who has lactose intolerance may feel diarrhea, feeling bloated , abdominal pain, nausea ,gas and feeling sick after they eat or drink something that contains lactose between 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Lactase intolerance may cause lactase deficiency and lactase malabsorption. Lactase deficiency is when the small intestine doesn’t produce enough lactase, which can lead to symptoms of lactose intolerance. Lactose malabsorption refers to inefficient digestion of lactose that passes to the colon. Then bacteria can break the undigested lactose in the colon, and then lactose intolerance will occurred. Most people can drink and eat a small amount of lactase, and they don’t feel any symptom. Lactase intolerance is not food allergy; it is a digestive system disorder.
There are some ways to treat lactose intolerance. Milk and dairy products are the main sources of lactose, and avoiding this product may help your symptoms. However, if you can’t eat any dairy foods, you may not be getting enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Therefore lactose intolerance can affect your health. There are different ways to live with in lactose intolerance. What works for one person may not work for another because there is no cure for lactose intolerance. To prevent the symptom, first, you can limit the amount of milk and milk products in your diet. Some people who have lactose intolerance can have small amount of lactose without any symptom. Second, you can change your diet with less lactose, such as Swiss or cheddar cheese, may not cause problems....
