Since the day I was born, I was raised in a Christian environment. As I grew older I was accustomed to attending church every Sunday and growing in my faith. I was taught to obey by these certain guidelines that Bible addresses also referred to as the “Ten Commandments”. Some of these rules include honoring your mother and father; you should not steal, murder, commit adultery and not worship other Gods (Exodus 20, New International Version). Although these are important rules, the most well known ordinance in the Bible discussing marriage is, “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind…” (Leviticus 18:22. New International Version) also referring to it as “abomination”. I spent most of my life believing that the only morally correct type of marriage is one between a male and a female. As I have grown older, I have been exposed to the homosexual community due to high school and by attending college. I also didn’t realize how difficult it was for them to be accepted by society. According to the FBI’s annual Hate Crime Statistics report for 2011, over one thousand individuals were targeted physically due to their sexual orientation. Based upon this sickening statistic, I honestly believe that there should be better rights and protective laws for homosexual individuals. I will persuade you to also believe this by informing you of the slim laws now protecting them, why we should increase the amount of laws for them, and by presenting a concession.

First, I will familiarize you with the current laws that protect and do not protect the homosexual community. Being a student myself, I know what it’s like to be surrounded by people my age in a learning environment. Throughout my day I frequently catch individuals who use homophobic language such as “gay” and “fag”.
