The Landlady
I was sitting in the plane on my way to England and I was incredible excited. I was just like a little girl, looking forward to Christmas Eve. I should be an exchange student and I was on my way to my host family, where I would live for three months. But I had to find a place to stay the first night, be-cause I arrived a day earlier. I was really busy in the airport, because I had to find my luggage and then run over to the train station to catch the last train to the city Bath, where my host family lived nearby. Luckily I managed it all.
When I came to the town, I went for a walk, to see the quaint streets lined with small houses. In be-tween the nice houses, there was a small Bed and Breakfast. It was getting late and I had to find a place to sleep. Bed and Breakfast used to be cheap, so I looked through the window. The room was lit by the fire in the fireplace. In front of the fireplace lay a small dog who slept. The room was filled with nice furnitures. A large sofa, several chairs and a small piano. In one corner I saw a parrot in a cage and in the second I glimpsed two mannequin dolls. On the table stood a sewing machine. I felt at home straight away and decided that I would like to stay overnight. I rang the doorbell and before I even managed to take my finger off the buzzer, she stood there. The Landlady. She was like a jack-in-the-box. She just popped out! The Land Lady seemed to be sweet, but also a little bit crazy. I thought that she reminded a bit about my own grandmother! We quickly agreed about the price to stay overnight. It was very cheap and she had no other guests, so there was a room available for me.
The room was upstairs, and as we walked up the stairs, she mumbled something like: “I like you. You have exactly the right size” At the same time she looked at me from head to toe.
