Leadership in Organizations
The best example of leadership is leading by example. With this being said many organizations for profit or nonprofit have missed this piece within their organization. There are several different approaches to leadership. You must know the strengths of the approach while also knowing what the weaknesses that comes with that approach. Leadership approaches can be changed over time if that approach is not working within the organization. It will be shown that power of influence approach is what will best fit all organizations looking for leadership.
Power of Influence
Many studies have been done on power of influence from leaders. One study from Oklahoma State University states “It is common to believe power belongs to the leader, but those who study leadership and power; point out that power is actually a function of the leader, the followers, and the situation. In other words, power is a function of a relationship. Followers allow the leader to lead, and leaders derive their power from followers.” This lets one know that a good leader understands they have the power to influence their followers to do what is asked of them but don’t use it as if they have the power to control their followers but to push them to success. Without the leader knowing this will lead to a weakness of the power of influence leadership which is having a leader taking advantage of their followers. This kind of leadership has gone on for many years. Some examples are Enron and Halliburton scandals. Each one influenced everyone within the company that was not on their board of trustees along with the rest of the world to invest in their companies without knowing the truth.
