Leadership: Sets the Tone of Ethical Behavior

Ethics and Kudler Fine Foods
What is ethics? Ethics is defined as “the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation” Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2009). Ethics is viewed as an individual or organization aspect. In an organization, it is usually leadership that sets the tone of ethical behavior. Ethics is a crucial characteristic that leaders should possess in an organization, and the criteria for a leader according to Yokl (2006)consists of the following “services followers and the organization, attempts to balance and integrate diverse interests, develops a vision based on follower input about their needs, values and ideas…” (p. 422). Although ethics is important, many organizations have lost their ethical behavior and criteria, which has resulted in the downfall of many organizations. In the downfall of organizations, the leadership behavior that was present according to Yokl (2006) consisted of “falsifying information, stealing assets for personal use, blaming others for one’s own mistakes, provoking unnecessary hostility and distrust among others, selling secrets to competitors, showing favoritism in return for a bribe, and engaging in reckless behaviors that are likely to injure others” (p. 418). Putting the past aside, it is up to upcoming leaders or managers to bring ethical behavior back into organizations to achieve the goals and visions such forth. As a possible future leader or manager, my values in ethical behavior align closely with honesty and keeping to my promises or commitments, taking responsibility for mistakes, but also trying to correct my mistakes. My ethical behavior is composed of many positive aspects that align with the values of Kudler Fine Foods and my values will enable me to be a manager or possible leader who will empower those who I supervise to possess or obtain the same values and ethics to bring about success in the Kudler Fine Foods organization
