We all have witnessed a person walking their dog, or dogs, at some point during the day on the leash. Usually, we think nothing about it or the occasional “oh look at that cute puppy!” Would you have the same perspective if there was a child on the leash rather than the dog? It happens everywhere, everyday, from family vacations to places like Disney World, to even walking up the driveway to fetch the mail.

I will never forget my first time experiencing a child on a leash. I was about eleven years old but I did not really understand what it or the purpose of it. However, last summer I got to experience it more often then needed. For example, my family and I took a little vacation to Wild Adventures in Valdosta, Georgia. It is an amusement park as well as a huge water park. My family and I were just minding our own business going from ride to ride when a group of parents walked by and behind them were their children on leashes! At first I just glanced at it but then I turned around and was astonished at the sight. Those poor children, at an amusement park and they are being pulled on a leash like they were a dog. What put the cherry on top of the cake was when the little boy started crying because he wanted to ride Bug Out but his parents went the other way.

Statistics show that three out of every five mothers say they use the leash method because it gives them a better sense of protection of their child from kidnappers. Angel Sharum says, “If the parent is in the middle of the aisle and the kid down around the corner….. because the kid leash is fully extended and the parent paying no attention….. what’s to keep someone from cutting the leash and running off with the kid?” Many parents seem to use the leash as a loop hole to not having to pay so...
