Legalizing Marijuana: the Controversy

Legalizing Marijuana
A very common question that provokes a lot of controversy is whether or not marijuana should be legalized. Many people say yes, but at the same time many people disagree. Prohibiting marijuana does not help the country in any way, and it causes a lot of problems. Keeping marijuana illegal is also expensive. And lets not forget about the people who would benefit from it such as people with cancer. Therefore, marijuana should be legalized.
One reason is that the prohibition of marijuana doesn’t work or help the country, and it causes many problems. There is no good evidence that keeping marijuana illegal decreases its use. One of the reasons this drug is very valuable is because it is illegal, it has the “forbidden fruit” effect though it is not supposed to be consumed people have the tendency to try it anyways. Marijuana is also very popular in high schools. Many people may ask, “why is that?” The reason being is that because it is available, and the kids don’t need an ID confirming that they are 21 years old to buy it, having money is their ID. As long as he/she has money he/she is able to buy it. It is simply easier for a kid to get marijuana than it is for him/her to get alcohol. Because alcohol is legal therefore it is regulated to keep it away from kids. In conclusion prohibition does not work.
Another reason isthat the cost of keeping marijuana illegal is very high. There’s the cost of law enforcement, the cost of incarceration of convicted “offenders” which is increasing, the cost of foster care and social services for children of incarcerated “offenders” and more. We spend billions of dollars every year to chase peaceful people who happen to like getting high. These are the people who go to jail and taxpayers have to foot the bill. We have to pay for food, housing, health care, attorney fees and more. We could save billions of dollars every year if we stop locking people up who have marijuana. Therefore if marijuana were legal...
