Legalizing Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana was legalized in Michigan during the last election on November 4, 2008. The Michigan’s medical marijuana law, Initiated Law 1 of 2008 received an unbelievable 63% of votes. It actually received the majority support in 83 of Michigan’s counties. This law went into effect on December 4, 2008 and Michigan becomes the thirteenth state to legalize medical marijuana. The reason marijuana has been legalized in these thirteen states; most recently Michigan is due to the fact that studies have shown that marijuana has helped in quite a few medical cases, whether it be for treatments, pain reliever, appetite loss, any number of things, it has shown positive results in the medical field. The Webster’s Dictionary defines marijuana as the dried leaves and flowering tops of the pistillate hemp plant that yield THC and can be smoked in cigarettes for their intoxicating effect. The THC found in marijuana is also known as tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the chemical compound found in the cannabis plant also known as marijuana. Marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes for several years in the states and in other cultures. Through research, I plan to discuss the history of marijuana, it’s uses, the pros and cons of using marijuana, the reason why the government has been so opposed to legalizing marijuana in the past, the different cultures that use marijuana today, among a few others (http://www.mpp.org/states/michigan/).
To better understand marijuana we have to look into what exactly marijuana is and the different types of applications for this now, prescription drug in some states. As we know marijuana is the green or gray mixture of dried and shredded flowers and leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. Marijuana is mostly known to be a mind-altering substance.
