If you were sitting next to a same sex couple would it bother you? Same sex marriage is one of the most controversial issues in the modern world. For the past thousand years, marriage has been recognized as the social union between a man and a woman. In most cultures across the globe, homosexuality is viewed with disgust, and same-sex marriage is forbidden. Same sex marriage should be legal because the number of successful adoptions would increase, it’s an issue of equal rights, and church and state should be separated. Same sex marriage should also be legalized because marriage can help stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, by commitment amongst partners. Since early 1960’s, same sex activists have been striving for the right to marry. However, the issue of same sex marriage only arose from the 1990’s, as three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit against the state of Hawaii for the prohibition of same sex marriage in US. The case has come to a conclusion that banning same sex marriage is not constitutional, as there is no real practical reason and compelling arguments for it (Time Magazine).
If same sex marriage is to be legalized, the number of child adoptions would increase, since same sex couples cannot procreate naturally. According to the website Adoptive Families researchers from the U.S. Census Bureau recently found that 26.5 percent of lesbian couples had children in their household in 2008, up from 22 percent in 1990. For same sex couples, the figure rose from five percent to 13.9 percent (Adoptions by Same-Sex Couples Still on the Rise). Most adoption agencies discriminate against same sex couples and make it incredibly difficult for them to adopt children. Many agencies will only release children to "married" couples, therefore rejecting stable, homosexual parents.
