The current issues between the American Indians and the Federal Government include the Indian Healthcare Improvement Act. The president of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Joe Garcia recently came together in Washington to identify reauthorization of the Indian Healthcare Improvement Act that is to include overall better healthcare for the Indian communities and the methamphetamine abuse. The two groups are taking great actions to eliminate to ever-growing methamphetamine problem.
During the visit, Joe Garcia called upon Congress to enact the “Meth Act Tribal Fix” so tribes have the resources they need to protect vulnerable children and families who are at risk.
The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) have been working together for five years to promote intergovernmental cooperation between states and tribes through a State-Tribal Relations Project. The States and Indian Tribes have many common interests that include the fair use of resources such as education, healthcare, and law enforcement. Because sometimes the two have the same interests the two sides often, overlap in responsibilities involved in the implementation often times has led to jurisdictional disputes that have led to lawsuits. The Sate-Tribal Project works very hard to improve and ease the effectiveness of the state-tribal cooperation so that litigation is not necessary.
In this country, 50 state governments and more than 550 tribal governments are working towards the goal of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the Indian people. By keeping these objectives in mind, both groups may realize that they have more in common than in difference and that coordination and cooperation between states and tribes can be beneficial to all.
