In the 1960s’ and 70s’, there was a heavy gay liberation movement, the rights and privileges that were fought for during that time included being equal to others and to be treated as a human and citizen. The irony does not come into play, until now, when President Barack Obama discussed the immigration reform. The immigration reform relates to the gay immigrants because they are not identified as citizens and they come from a violent country that persecutes homosexuals. Along with this notion, gay immigrants while faced with cruel and unusual punishment from their country, gay immigrants face cruel and unusual discrimination in the United States. For this reason, the LGBTQ communities along with other organizations are advocates for gay immigrants. With the help of the LGBTQ community and other organizations they can help those immigrants who come from a country were laws forbid homosexuality, and help keep families together and prevent further mistreatment legally and in prisons.
In November of 2013, President Barack Obama discussed the overwhelming amount of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. There is currently over 10 million undocumented adults living in the United States, and 267,000 of them are identified as homosexual or transgendered (Olivia, 2013). The fear that the gay immigrants and LGBTQ community have, is that if deported, many people will lose lives, jobs, and families; therefore, the LGBTQ community is fighting along with other immigrants for the immigration reform. Today, over 70 countries, prosecute same-sex adults for sexual acts, and many of the LGBTQ communities in these countries are suffering from agonizing pain and need a place to retreat. However, if this bill along with others is not passed, the United States is stating that, it is not a free and culturally diverse country, and being tortured is not its problem.
