This research is aimed to examine and look at how social networks sites or SMSs, effect young adults’ self-esteem and overall well-being. The millennial generation is experiencing the world in a very unique way with the rapid growth and dependence on technology. SMSs play a large role in how each in how young adults communicate with one another and is one of the primary methods in how they experience the world. SMSs give good insight into what is happening with the future generation.
This study provided information on the correlation between social media and low and/or high self-esteem. With SMSs being a primary way in which young adults communicate and interact with one another, it is reasonable to assume that SMSs make some sort of impact on the way they view themselves based on their interactions on them. Although there is limited to research on this topic due to the newness of this online culture.
The purpose of this study was to provide beneficial information to the development of ways to combat negative feelings associated with ones’ online presence. With the ever growing issue of cyberbullying, it is important to find out if SMSs are significant factors in causing low self-esteem, which can lead to depression.
The significance of this study would be that it provides useful insight into to how to care for a new generation’s mental health. Never before has there been such a dependence on technology and researchers have yet to look in to all the facets of how it might affect mental health. This study would add to research already conducted and help future researchers gain a working knowledge of this new field. Health care providers need to be as informed as possible to combat potential problems that may arise from the growth of technology.
