Crime has always been an issue in society today, why we have crime and what we can do to prevent it. As crime is thought more of as the actions of a person then just created, you can isolate certain crime by showing this in the papers, in the media and witness it in society on a day to day basis. Crime as a whole has to be measured by other means, estimated in statistics put forward from the home office to show the public how crime is dealt with in society. These statistics are arranged from crime which has been reported and convicted in a criminal court, so is a true representation of crime. That is not always the case as many of these statistics are the more serious and middle array of crimes which has been charged and convicted in the law courts.

When the official crime statistics were first indicated in 1876 crime was fairly low, this was not showing crime did not exist at this time, but often crime was not reported as it is today. Mainly crime was not reported as it was dealt with by other means and secondly was due to lack of communication with the police service, as in the eighteen hundreds a person could not pick up the phone or email to report a crime. Certain crimes also became a problem and this was recognised, as there was a great fall in alcohol related crimes due to tougher licensing laws which were enforced. The rise of crimes also doubled dramatically, especially after the Second World War. Maybe this was due to people who for years had fought for Queen and country, when the war was over had no means of supporting the family. Many of the jobs had been taking away from society, with a lot of businesses been destroyed through the effects of this war. Having situation like this could turn people to crime, but today crime is at its highest.

Why is crime different today? With household goods becoming more of luxury such as cars, televisions and laptops to name a few, is this giving crime more reason to happen. Maybe people who can not afford...
