The Job Search Process Finding a job can be a difficult process. It requires careful planning, following through, perseverance, and a positive attitude. Although it seems like a simple process, you will almost always experience failure and rejection during your search. The better you get at your job search, the easier it becomes. And once you learn to master the process, it’s over. But it is a life skill that you will return to again and again. Almost everyone will go through the job seeking process several times during their life. The job search process can sometimes be a job in itself! First you must decide what career field you are interested in. Consider your skills, interests, and values, while making sure to keep your goals realistic to your abilities. You could also use resources such as The Occupational Outlook Handbook provided by the U.S. Department of Labor. This guide highlights hundreds of occupations, covering 9 out of 10 jobs in the industry. Additionally, it describes each occupation’s projected employment change over the next decade. This would be a great tool for helping you decide on a long-term career goal. Once you decide on your desired position, you will need to research different companies that offer that position. Each employer has something different to offer, which may determine whether or not you want to work there. Next, you must prepare your application materials. A well-written and attractive resume are imperative in making a good first impression. You will need to include past and present employer information, your education history, references, and any other knowledge or skills that you may possess. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Job Outlook 2008 Survey, the top five personal qualities/ skills that employers seek are: communication skills, work ethic, teamwork skills, initiative, and interpersonal skills (citation).
