Lord’s Resistance Army

In Uganda there is a struggle. The war there has been said to be the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today. Since the late 90’s, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), led by self acclaimed spirit medium Joseph Kony, and the Ugandan government have been waging a war that has left nearly two million innocent civilians directly affected and over 12,000 dead. The lack of action that is being taken by Sudan and foreign countries to stop Joseph Kony and Kony himself, are the sole causes that have ruined so many lives today in Uganda.
The Lord’s Resistance Army did not form on its own but arose from a previous rebel group. A Ugandan rebel group in the late 1980’s known as the Holy Spirit Mobile Force was led by a women prophetess, Alice Lakwena. She claimed to be in contact with the Holy Spirit and gained enormous support with her promise to defeat the government and rid their country of evil sinners and witches. In 1987, Alice led a movement of her followers against the government by marching against the city Kampala. She anointed her followers in shea butter, to protect them against bullets, and performed other rituals to her followers armed with rifles and stones. When they were sixty miles from the city they were attacked by the government and thousands of her loyal followers were killed by the government’s superior modern artillery.
After her defeat, Lakwena fled to Kenya but a few of her followers remained faithful to her cause, under the leadership of one of her relatives, Joseph Kony. Kony too promised to “purify” their country and overthrow their “heathen” government and these goals were to be accomplished through violence. Despite the governments hard work to bring Kony and his followers to an end, The Lord’s Resistance Army, has never been able to be fully stamped out.
