William Shakespeare, an English poet, playwright and actor during the 16th century, explored a variety of themes through his work. His play Macbeth, a tragedy which explores the potential for both good and evil within human nature through the central characters Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and a range of dramatic and language devices.
The play highlights the potential that every human being has for both good and evil within them. Macbeth shows sign of good through his sympathy for King Duncan and his guilty conscience at the thought of murdering him in order to obtain the throne. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth was is a respected, admired thane. He was is often referred to by other characters as ‘Noble Macbeth’, ‘Worthy Macbeth’ and ‘my worthy Cawdor’. The reputation accumulation of praising adjectives demonstrates that Macbeth’s reputation as a loyal and good-hearted soldier. Macbeth’s potential for good is also shown in one of his soliloquys after meeting the witches, where the first thought of murder enters his mind.. His dialogue and use of sensory imagery in The quote, “That suggestion whose horrid image doth unfix my hair and make my sated heart knocks at my ribs”,”. Here, his dialogue and use of sensory imagery reveals his anxiety about killing the king. Furthermore, Macbeth’s potential for good is also shown when he was reflectingreflects on reasons not to kill King Duncan such as hn. His soliloquy,”I am his kinsmen and his subject… who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself.” Also, in the line, “this his virtues will plead like angels”,.
