Major Incidents

A major incident can be detrimental in many ways including long term problems such as

Personal problems

• health problems:
o withdrawal
o Fatigue
o Fast heart rate
o Nausea
o Confusion
o Shame
o Resentment
o Shock
o Insomnia
o Anger
o Fear
o Post traumatic stress disorder
o Etc
• Disablement – this can effect peoples live immensely as it impacts everything from transport to their jobs.
• Bereavement – this can cause many problems like depression and trauma which can ultimately affect their lifestyles.
• Destruction of livelihood – this is where for instance someone who has invested their money in plane transport and when a plane crashes or is blown up the investment will go down etc.

Environmental problems

Contamination:
• Chemical hazards
• Petrol/oil pollution
• Nuclear radiation
• Biological contamination
These all effect the environment as it will kill of wildlife and the natural environment for many years for example Chernobyl (1986) is still radio active and is still effecting sheep in Wales thousands of miles away.

Here are three organisations that deal with some of the above situations:

NHS physiotherapy department – these will mainly deal with the long term physiological health problems associated with disasters for instance if somebody damages their legs in a way the will temporally disable them they might need immediate surgery but also surgery further down the line as well as the need for rehabilitation and physiotherapy in order to get their muscles working again this is done by the NHS physiotherapy department

Response UK LTD – this is an organisation that deal with chemical hazards and decontamination they will clean up the area which can take a while as everything can be affected and then they will monitor the situation...
