Malcolm X and Bell Hooks
​ Have you ever had that eager feeling to learn something new and you strive for it and accomplishing is makes you feel good? In the short stories Bell Hooks and Malcolm X both share the same similarities, they both wanted their education and how they strived for it, but they also hid from people around them. They were both stigmatized, for being African American; they didn’t deserve class or Education. Both Malcolm X and Bell Hooks did their own homemade Education.
​ Many people have gotten a put down from a teacher or from someone close to them, they have gotten to the point were they get discouraged and don’t follow their dream because they let the discourage get in the way of it. Malcolm X was discouraged from his eighth grade teacher, he pursed him from a law career, and by saying it was not a “realistic goal” for an African American (18). Even though Malcolm did not continue his education it did not stop him getting anywhere or from continue his learning. “Many who today hear me somewhere in person, or on television, or those who read something I’ve said, will think I went to school far beyond the eighth grade. This impression is due entirely to my prison studies” (19). While facing a sentence in prison he had the urge to continue his learning. Malcolm X would write letter to Mr. Elijah Muhammad, and because of these letters that’s were he stumbled upon starting to acquire some kind of homemade education. “In the streets, I had been the most articulate hustler out there…”(19) Malcolm didn’t know the proper form of speaking English he would speak the “slang” form of English. Malcolm X also discovered history and began to get into reading them he checked out books from the library. “ I really studied this book by the Austrain monk. Reading it over and over, especially certain sections, helped me to understand that if you started with a black man, a white man could be produced; but starting with a white man, you never could...
