Manager's Role

As regards to managing people, it is described that manager is involved in selecting team members. But this hardly happens. In most of the cases, manager is informed about who will be his/her team members. Many a time, it happens that all the team members are not equipped with required skill and experience and manager is asked to groom them. Of course, managers are supposed to groom team members but at the same time, it is necessary that team members should be able to deliver as per commitment to client. This makes managers life miserable as he has to interact with different people like Business team, project team, senior managers, entertaining others ad-hoc requests (sometimes from other projects), preparing status report, handling unforeseen issues etc. and he hardly gets time to train/groom the team members. Team member looks at him/her for the guidance and support but manager always cannot do this. If manager puts all the efforts to groom the team member, he/she will be pulled for some other project. In such situation, manager finds it difficult to handle the client but he/she has to manage the situation. During the project execution, client expects (also senior management) a fast delivery and meet deadline (which may not be realistic) where as team member expects that they should be given reasonable time. In such situation, manager just becomes fire wall and takes heat from both sides, client & senior management as well as team members. As mentioned in lesson, managers always receives request for information from different people like other project’s manager who is having difficulty, pre-sale team who is talking to a prospective client and needs some information, ex team member who is working on some other project & now stuck in some difficulty, senior manager who is preparing proposal needs some help in estimation, a sales guy who expects him/her to join her in client meeting and so on.
