Mary Ward is a wealthy, intelligent woman who lives in Maryland. Her husband is a large landowner who owns hundreds of slaves. Only 15-20 percent of colonists were loyalists. Most colonists in Maryland were loyalists, but not all. Mary was a patriot. During the war, most loyalists in Maryland lost all of their land. A very few rich plantation owners controlled the tobacco trade between Britain and the colonies. Poorer Maryland planters were offered easy credit before their harvest time. When they went to sell their crops, they were given little money for their efforts. This left them in debt to Britain for large amounts of money. If you were not one of those elite few in control of the tobacco trade to Britain, you were in debt. These Maryland plantation owners saw the revolution as a way to get out of paying their huge debts. After the war, these debts were not repaid. Marylanders and England were constantly battling over land. Patriots wanted to keep their land. Most of Maryland was rich elite class. Patriots included everything from a farmer to a lawyer. England kept imposing taxes upon the colonists. Patriots were opposed to these taxes. They argued that it was taxation without representation. They believed that the colonies didn’t have a say in Parliament because it was so far away. Since they weren’t represented, they shouldn’t have to pay taxes. Taxation would take property away from citizens. Some patriots felt that they have already fought in the French and Indian war so therefore they had done their part and did not want to participate in another battle. Patriots wanted nothing to do with the British because they were causing violence, riots and death in their country. (Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party) They believed that the colonists had no obligation to pay England for the debt of the French Indian war.
