The VIETNAM Veterans Memorial is national memorial located in WASHINGTON, DC. It dedicated to service members of US forces, who fought in the Vietnam War, who died in service in the VIETNAM, and who was missing in action during the War. VIETNAM Veterans Memorial let the names of those lost in combat to speak for themselves. Memorial consists of three separate parts: the Three Soldiers statue, the VIETNAM Women’s Memorial, and the VIETNAM Veterans Memorial Wall (best known part of the Memorial), designed by American architect Maya LIN. Memorial receives around three million visitors each year. Maya LIN appeared on public eye as senior at Yale University, when her design for VIETNAM Veterans Memorial won national competition by unanimous decision of eight architects and sculptors. Maya LIN was trained as an artist and architect. Her works are linked by her ideal of making a place for individuals within the landscape. LIN’s design of the Memorial Wall will impress you by simplicity, honesty, and power. V-shaped sunken wall of black stone with names of those, who killed in action, engraved in chronological order. Stone for the Wall came from INDIA and was chosen for its reflective properties. Stone cutting was done in VERMONT, and the names were etched in TENNESSEE. When visitor looks upon the Wall, his or her reflection can be seen simultaneously with the engraved names. Therefore, past and present, symbolically, brought together. A mourner will walk along the Monument in search of loved one and find the name among the 57,661 listed. Maya LIN expressed her intention: “I wanted to describe journey, journey that would make you experience death and where you’d have to be and observer, where you could never really fully to be with the dead.” Maya LIN’s design was very controversial – it lacks the realistic statuary of the most war memorials.
