nIn the nursing world the options and opportunities are limitless. The opportunity to try a field and decide that it isn’t for you is a characteristic that is unique to the nursing field. Med/SurgeNursing has always been interesting to me. The ability to help so many people heal has always attracted me. Med/surgenurses have a large amount of autonomy as they are the ones who decide how to provide nursing care to the patient. While a med/surge nurse may work under the direction of a doctor and carry out the doctor’s orders, it is the nurses responsibility to provide the medical care. The nurse is responsible for distributing medications and providing the outpatient instructions. The doctor signs the orders but the nurse is the one who carries them out. The median salary for a med/surge nurse in May 2007 was $57,280 annually. Med/surge nurses specialize in the care of post operative patients as well as adult patients with acute health condition complicated by diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. A med/surgenurse can be found working in outpatient facilities, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. They manage between 5-7 patients per nurse as well as the discharges and intakes that may occur throughout the day. They must be flexible and dedicated. There must be a love of the job and a need to help people heal. The med/surge nurse makes a difference in a patients life and can help the patient to live a healthier and longer life. To be certified by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses in Pitman New Jersey, you need to have your RN, a baccalaureate degree is not required. A minimum of two years as a registered nurse on an adult med-surgesetting, and a minimum of 3,000 hours in practice is required to take the certification exam.
