.Anesthesiologist are the doctors that put patients to sleep before surgery and monitor them during surgery making sure they a fully asleep. First anesthesiologist must examine the lab work, x-rays, and cardiac history to determine in its safe to put patients to sleep and have surgery. Before the surgery anesthesiologist talk with the patients and ask them questions about their medical history and prep them for surgery. This is called the pre-op which stands for “preoperative interview”. After the pre-op they go into the block room where they administer blocks on the patient. Blocks are just when they numb the area they are going to perform surgery on.
When ready for surgery, they give them anesthesia to put them to sleep. There are three different types of anesthesia that is general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and local anesthesia. General anesthesia delivers inhalational gases to keep the patient asleep. Regional anesthesia injects local anesthetics around nerves these would include peripheral blocks as well as epidural or spinal blocks. Local anesthesia infiltrates areas of the skin. When the patient is asleep they then keep watch of their brain activity and heart rate.
Once the surgery is over the patient then goes into recovery room where nurses take care of them but anesthesiologist are responsible for supervising the nurses and decide when the patient is ready to leave the hospital. Anesthesiologist also can call into prescriptions for the patients. If patient need to take a certain medicine after the surgery the anesthesiologists tell them what to take and for how long they should be on that medicine.
To be an anesthesiologist or any other doctor it requires many years of schooling. A person who wants to become a doctor must take four years of college.
