As I arrived to the Big Island, I tried to put him out of my head. I started to rehearse my fake smile and hellos to my family. Even though I had never met them, it seemed important to give them a good first impression. When I got out of the car, I smiled my best fake smile that I could make, and gave a big hug to Aunty Pearl. (My mother’s sister) Then I saw them, my cousin Keo and his cousin Sonny. Something about them made me think of my father and I just couldn’t handle it. I felt like crying but I had to hold it in. When I finally got myself to acknowledge them, a subtle “Hi” came out. I have to admit, it sounded a little mean, almost like I was talking to yardmen… I regretted my tone right as it came out, though I did nothing about it. I just lost it in Keo’s room. (The room that I was staying in) Thank God Aunty Pearl was there to sooth me or I don’t think I could have stopped. When I finally came out, I overheard Keo saying that it would suck to show me around. I mean I heard this right after I stopped crying, but I wasn’t sad when I heard this, so when I replied with a simple ‘oh’ he freaked. Then I got mad. I kept my cool, but all I said was “that’s okay, kid.” I knew that he knew what I really meant. They both stormed off, and I said ‘morons’ under my breath though I think Sonny heard it. Actually, Sonny was not too bad at first. Keo wanted to spend the night at Sonny’s house that day and Aunty Pearl was a little hesitant, but I wanted all of the extra pressure off my back so I convinced her to let him go. The next morning, Keo and Sonny were supposed to show me the Kona Inn and the little shops in Kailua. Aunty Pearl was just about to give Keo five dollars but I got there just in time to get it, that kid would have lost it for sure and I wasn’t going to have my day ruined because we had no money at the end of the day.
