 Throughout the movie there was a heavy theme of indifference towards AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), previously termed GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency). Due to heavy prejudices within America’s culture no one in any field of expertise cared to fight the battle against the quickly rising epidemic. It was overlooked in medical fields, research areas and in the government because of apathy of homosexuals.
The medical and research areas shown in the movie completely overlooked the issues. Continuously the researches that were main characters were being denied money for research. They had a grant that had been passed over a year ago was still being denied as said in one part of the movie. *****
The media slightly mentioned the unknown illness once in 18__ however after that there were no major media announcements for years after the spread in America. People were spreading it across the country and most Americans did not have the slightest clue that there was an issue. However when the media did begin discussing the issue, it intensely hurt the research. America began to blame and fear the gay communities. ***In one case the hospital threatened to fire a doctor because he was helping the GRID patients, the hospital said the other patients were afraid to come to the hospital because it was known for treating such patients.
The media advertising and non-advertising GRID/AIDS led to the government ignoring the issue. The political involvement in homosexuals at the time was to “touchy” for any political officer. The government was afraid that a stance against homosexuals would receive a very hostile aggression from many sides. On the other hand a stance to help the homosexuals was also against a lot of America’s morals, therefore they would quickly begin opposing the government. Because homosexuals are a minority, the government chose to stay quite as to not upset the majority of their voters.
