2.  Why is it that high-ranking positions in business, government and academia are still occupied largely by men? And why are women still so scarce in engineering, maths and the sciences?
3. Dare to raise such questions at a party and you'll get some very different answers.
4. Discrimination is the obvious answer - and one you'll get from many women. Differential treatment of women and men with equal ability may cause women to end up in different occupations to men.
5. But some men - and a few women - will tell you the reason is that most women don't choose to compete for high positions. They don't enjoy accepting the responsibilities of managers, or they may dislike working in maths, science or engineering.
