Messing About in Boats was written by Will Millar. The book is about certain happenings in his life. Will goes through the book telling stories of the sea and how on many different occasions he had a guardian angel watching over him. Will tells stories of love, heartache, influential people in his life, and disasters at sea.

The book started off by explaining whom Will Millar was and what the Irish Rovers were. Will Millar is many things, he is a father, a musician, and among other things an author. The Irish Rovers are a folk singing group that Will was a part of for 30 years. Then the book backtracks to when Will was a child. It was then living on the coasts of Ireland that he first started dreaming of being a sailor. The book then takes the reader with Will through his life stories. Will tells stories of all the boats he lost at sea and how no matter what he will continue to sail. Then there are stories of people he has met in his life that he will never forget. George Vatcher was Will?s neighbor for many years and he was later lost at sea and proclaimed dead. From the moment he met her he knew that ! he wanted to win her love. That obviously was successful and had a happy ending. Many different stories that were told in the book show the reader who Will is and where he came from.

The book was written in 1996 yet the language use in it at times was much older. Will in some instances used words that are not used in Canada today. Will grew up in Ireland and later in life moved back there. Therefore his language use in this book was written by a true Irishman. The book also contained songs that either Will had written or just of songs that he happen to love. The songs were always Irish folk songs, that related to the story Will was telling....
